Lions and Cardinals Battle for First in the Flyway

Posted

On January 24, Lomira boys’ basketball defeated Mayville 68-63 in a battle of the top two teams in the Flyway Conference standings.
Mayville (7-5, 5-2) jumped out to a 6-0 lead over Lomira (13-1, 7-0), highlighted by a block of Charlie Cole’s three-pointer by Talan Meyer, which Meyer converted into a fastbreak layup.
Lomira responded to take a 15-10 lead over the Cardinals, thanks to two three-pointers from Keegan Kell and one three-pointer from Blake Steger.
The Cardinals countered with their offense by going on a 10-5 scoring run, featuring three-pointers from Meyer and Braxton Wiese, with Wiese’s shot bouncing straight up then back into the basket to help tie the game at 20 between the two rivals.

The Lions spurted out to a 31-24 lead with a three-pointer from Hunter Duley from the corner, Cole, and Kell from the top of the key, with Duley assisting on the threes from Cole and Kell.
Mayville threw the next offensive punch in the game, scoring the next nine of 11 points in the game, highlighted by an Owen Steger steal, which he finished in a fastbreak hoop, which helped the Cardinals close the gap to 33-32 on the scoreboard.
Jake Broeske converted an old-fashioned three-point play by hitting a free throw after scoring in the post to give the Lions a 36-32 halftime lead over the Cardinals.
Broeske took over the game early in the second half by scoring eight straight points, including a strong two-hand dunk. Then he showed his defensive presence by blocking a shot to give Lomira a 44-33 lead before Mayville called a timeout at 15:07 in the second half.
Lomira was leading 50-38 when the Cardinals scored six straight points, featuring a Meyer offensive rebound to tighten the game back at 50-44, which resulted in Lomira taking a timeout with 10:34 left in the game.
The Lions responded with a 9-3 scoring stretch thanks to a Maddox Bodden three-pointer in the corner and four more points from Broeske to extend the Lions’ lead to 59-47 with eight minutes left in the second half.
Mayville wouldn’t go away without a fight, which the Cardinals did by going on a 12-4 scoring run over the next four minutes of the game, with Tate Drinkwine knocking down two big three-pointers to put the score at 63-59 in favor of Lomira with four minutes on the game clock.
Lomira led 65-61 when Drinkwine scored two points for Mayville, tightening the game to 65-63 with one minute left.
Kell knocked down a free throw with 35 seconds left to give the Lions a 66-63 lead, before the Cardinals called a timeout to set up an important possession.
Mayville’s Wiese missed a three-pointer from the wing to tie the game, then Broeske got the rebound to convert two free throws to ice the game for a 68-63 conference win.
Mayville was led by Talan Meyer’s 13 points and Tate Drinkwine’s 12 points in the contest.
Lomira was paced by Jake Broeske’s 23 points, plus Keegan Kell’s 14 points in the matchup.
“Very happy we accomplished our first goal of the season by leading the conference at the halfway point,” said Head Coach Nick Kohler. “I think we have another gear we can get to, we just have to be willing to work every day to get there.”
Lomira hosted Oakfield on January 27, after print time, and then will host Laconia on January 29 at 7 p.m.
Mayville will host Omro on January 30 at 7 p.m.
