Lions Advance to Sectionals with Two Home Shutout Wins

Posted

On May 28, Lomira softball beat Winnebago Lutheran Academy 8-0 at home in the Regional Final for their second consecutive Regional Championship.
Lomira (23-3) broke the scoreless tie in the third inning when Izzy Westphal hit a double over the left fielder’s head to drive in Trista Gassner, and Liy Christian hit a Sac Fly to get Westphal home to make the score 2-0 lead over WLA (14-10).
“We were putting the ball in play in the first few innings, and we had some quality at-bats, but the girls kept the energy the entire time and kept fighting with adjustments, and once we did, the girls really passed the bat,” said Head Coach Stacey Clark. “Being able to get a few more runs as the game went on helped to take the pressure off of the defense and allowed us just to have fun and play our game.”
The Lions got singles from Kennedy Goebel and Westphal to help load the bases in the fifth inning, with Haliegh Caspary capitalizing on the opportunity by hitting a two-run RBI single, plus an Eleanor Collies RBI single for Lomira to score four runs to take a 6-0 lead over the Vikings.

Lomira added two more runs in the sixth inning, featuring an RBI single from Collies to push the Lomira lead to 8-0.
Haleigh Caspary pitched a two-hit shutout by striking out eight Vikings batters to secure the tournament win for the Lions.
“Haleigh has really taken charge on the mound by growing in her ability to set the pace and cadence of her pitches,” said Clark. “She leads in the circle, even when facing good hitters. Her confidence and composure are a key component of our success.”
Eleanor Collies, Izzy Westphal, and Caspary combined for six hits and five runs batted in to pace the impressive Lomira batting order to beat the Vikings for the third time on the season.
“We are very proud of our hard work and the dedication of our team,” said Clark. “Our program is built on high expectations, so to continue those traditions at a high level back-to-back Regional Championships is a testament to the belief and work ethic of our players.
Vs Berlin
On May 26, the one-seed Lomira softball defeated the eight-seed Berlin 15-0 in three innings at home to advance to the Regional Final.
Lomira (23-3) scored four runs in the first inning, featuring an RBI single by Izzy Westphal and a two-run RBI single from Haleigh Caspary to take a 4-0 lead over Berlin (8-16).
The Lions offense got going again in the second inning with a leadoff Addy Behnke single, followed by a Westphal double, then a two-run RBI single by Lily Christian to push the Lomira lead to 8-0 before facing two outs in the inning.
Eleanor Collies hit a two-run RBI triple, and Behnke hit her second single of the inning to drive in a run to increase the Lions’ lead to an impressive 11-0 after two innings of play.
Lomira decided to make quick work of the Indians in the third inning by scoring four runs, highlighted by a Westphal two-run RBI single and a Christian RBI double to put the score at 14-0.
Brianna Frea finished off the scoring in the game with an RBI single, giving the Lions a commanding 15-0 win in the three innings in the second round over Berlin.
Haleigh Caspary and Lily Christian combined for the three-inning no-hitter by striking out seven Berlin batters in the tournament matchup.
Izzy Westphal, Christian, and Caspary combined for seven hits and eight runs batted in to pace the powerful Lions offense in the playoff victory.
