Lady Cardinals Split Nonconference Play, Tested in Tough Conference Stretch

Posted

The Mayville girls basketball team picked up a nonconference road win before running into two strong conference opponents during a busy three-game week, finishing the stretch at 1–2. Despite the results, the Lady Cardinals continued to compete with energy and effort, showing resilience and growth throughout the week.

At Chilton

Mayville opened the week on Jan. 26, with a solid 50–41 road victory at Chilton in nonconference play, improving to 5–11 on the season. The Cardinals built a nine-point halftime lead and matched the Tigers basket-for-basket in the second half to secure the win.

Senior Layla Budahn led the way with 14 points on efficient shooting, while freshman Brielle Ehlers added a double-double with 11 points and 11 rebounds. Freshman Brooke Waas chipped in nine points and five rebounds, and Ady Christian directed the offense with six assists and no turnovers. Mayville’s defensive pressure proved decisive, forcing 31 Chilton turnovers while recording 17 steals.

Vs Saint Mary’s Springs

The Cardinals returned home for conference play on Jan. 27, but struggled to find offensive rhythm in a 51–33 loss to Saint Mary’s Springs (8-9, 4-5). Mayville trailed 25–15 at halftime and was unable to close the gap in the second half.

Ady Christian paced Mayville with nine points, while Brooke Waas, Brielle Ehlers and Madison Justman each scored five. Christian and Ehlers also led the Cardinals on the boards with five rebounds apiece, as Mayville continued to battle defensively with nine steals and nine blocks.

At Omro

Mayville closed the week Jan. 30 on the road against Omro (12-4, 5-4), falling 85–47 to the Foxes in conference play. Omro used a fast start and consistent scoring in both halves to pull away early.

Despite the deficit, the Lady Cardinals finished the week (5-13,1-9) but kept playing hard, scoring 28 points in the opening half and continuing to push defensively as the game wore on. The young Mayville roster gained valuable experience against one of the conference’s top teams.

Looking ahead, the Lady Cardinals traveled to North Fond du Lac for a conference matchup on Tuesday, Feb. 3, before heading to Lomira on Thursday, Feb. 5, with tipoff scheduled for 7 p.m.
