The Mayville softball team ran into a red-hot Laconia offense Monday, May 19, falling 10-0 on the road, bringing the team to 14-6, 9-4 in the regular season.
The Spartans racked up 17 hits and steadily pulled away, scoring in four of the final five innings. Despite collecting six hits, the Cardinals struggled to generate momentum, leaving 11 runners on base.
Kate Aumann had a hit and scored Mayville’s lone run, while Pearl Witek went 1-for-2 with an RBI and a walk. Izzy McFadden doubled and drew a walk.
Janel Youngbeck started in the circle and took the loss, while Allie Schwirtz threw in relief, striking out six and allowing two earned runs.
As a team coming off a tough road loss, head coach Ashley Krueger stated, “As a team, the mindset at this point is pull together, play together. We as a team know that when everyone comes together, we have the potential to do great things.”
Looking ahead, the Cardinals are traveling to St. Mary’s Springs, playing a rescheduled game. They then turn their attention to the postseason. As the No. 3 seed, Mayville earned a first-round bye and will host No. 6 Westfield in a WIAA Division 3 Regional on Tuesday, May 27 at 5 p.m. at home.
