Joren Schlender Represents Mayville Football in the WFCA All-Star Game

Posted

“I started playing football in second grade with the Mayville Recreation Department, providing a flag football league that allowed me to compete with and against all of my friends, and I’ll never forget getting coached by some of the members of the high school football team,” said Joren Schlender. “I looked forward to one day getting to play in high school, and the flag football league ultimately helped develop my love for football.”
“Mayville football has helped me gain some experiences that not many people get to have in their high school career, and I’ll never forget playing at Camp Randall for the 2022 D5 state championship,” said Schlender. “I’m lucky enough to have gotten valuable playing time as a sophomore, and this ultimately set me up for success later in my career.”
“Another one of my favorite moments was my senior night, which was special not only because it was one of my last games in Mayville, but also because of what was on the line,” said Schlender. “We ended up taking down Lomira, who was undefeated in the Flyway, and in doing that, earned a share of the Flyway Conference championship, the Milk Can, and two more home games in playoffs. It was a great way to close out my final regular season.”
“In addition to the love I’ve developed for football, the sport has also shaped me into the person I am today. The lessons that you learn from football are endless,” said Schlender. “It is truly a brotherhood that brings you closer to everyone around you, and you play for every one of those people that are around you.”

“No matter the position you play, you are always leaning on one another for support in doing your job, and it takes many parts to make a successful play happen. Football teaches you to work together to have success,” said Schlender. “On top of that, football teaches you to be tough, headstrong, confident, and more. Football has played a role in making me a better person and setting me up for success in the future. I will value the countless lessons I’ve learned for the rest of my life.”
“I was blessed with a coaching staff that truly cared about us as players, and people as well, with one of the coaches who played a major role in my development being our defensive backs coach, Dan Decker. He pushed me to be a Free Safety that could make tackles and be a lockdown coverage guy. The energy he brought to every practice and game was significant, and it helped me bring that to the field. Without him, I wouldn’t be in the position I am today,” said Schlender.
“I was lucky enough to play with some players who will be remembered in Mayville for years. Two players who stand out are Blake Schraufnagel and Cole Legas. As a sophomore, I played behind Blake at the safety spot and also had opportunities to play with him. Blake cared about my development. He’d never sit back and let me figure stuff out on my own; instead, he communicated with me on things I could improve and what I might see in an upcoming game. Blake was an outstanding player and an even better teammate and person. I learned a lot watching him on and off the field,” said Schlender. "Cole pushed me every day in the weight room. He is one of the hardest workers I know, and watching his work ethic gave me an understanding of what it takes to have success. Cole’s leadership and work ethic stood out wherever he went, and that reflected onto many people, including me.”
“Not everyone gets the chance to play football with their brother. I was lucky enough to play with mine. Javen Schlender prepared me for everything. Whether it be having all my practice gear or helping me prepare for a big game, Javen always looked out for me, all while balancing his own football life. I owe all my success to these guys.”
“While I don’t plan to continue playing football at the next level, I will continue to do my best to be involved with the sport,” said Schlender. “I look forward to coming back to watch Mayville football games, and one day having kids and watching them grow up with the sport. If given the opportunity, I’d love to also one day get involved as a coach at any level of football.”
“I can’t say enough about Joren and everything he has dedicated to not only our football program, but to our entire athletic department, school, and community,” said Mayville Head Football Coach Scott Hilber.
“First, as a football player, Joren is everything we could ever want our athletes to be. He is a hard-nosed player who is athletic, durable, hard-working, and tough. Joren tackles every challenge we set, but most importantly, Joren is just a good human, and we love to coach great people,” said Hilber.
“As a representative for Mayville High School, Joren is best described as a quiet and soft-spoken individual by words, but he leads through his actions,” said Hilber. “Joren is an incredibly hard worker in training, in competition, and in the classroom. His work ethic has allowed him to earn All-Conference or All-Region accolades in all three of his high school sports while maintaining his status on the high honor roll.”
“Second, Joren is an outstanding leader, earning Captain awards in all three sports. He is the embodiment of a team player, and he is well respected by all his coaches and peers,” said Hilber.
“Finally, Joren is very generous with his time, which is evident through the countless hours of community service he has given while in high school. Joren’s commitment to excellence earned him the title of Mayville’s 2025 WIAA Scholar Athlete, as well as the prestigious ‘Cardinal Athletic Award’ in 2024, which is presented annually to a male and female underclassmen by the varsity head coaches for his dedication to sport, service, character and scholarship,” said Hilber.
“One of the main things I’ll forever be proud of is the success we had as a team in my high school career. In the four years that I was a part of the program, we won three Flyway Conference championships and made two state championship appearances. I will forever be proud that I helped maintain and grow the amazing culture and tradition that Mayville Football has had for years. These accomplishments as a team have helped me get recognized as an individual,” said Schlender.
