Iron Ridge Set to Begin Long-Awaited North Main Street Overhaul Later this Year

Posted

After decades of deteriorating pavement, North Main Street in Iron Ridge is slated for a full reconstruction this year, according to Director of Public Works Anthony Liebenow.
Liebenow said North Main Street has been “in pretty bad shape” for as long as he can remember—at least 15 to 20 years—but the scope and cost of the overhaul long kept the project on hold while the village focused on smaller repairs.
“We knew it was going to be a very expensive project, so we kind of always put that on the back burner,” Liebenow said in a recent interview.
A partnership with General Engineering, which offered a more economical construction plan, helped revive the effort. The project will replace water and sewer lines, install new utility poles and gas lines, and rebuild the road surface.
“Everything will be brand new. The road’s going to get cut down. It’s going to be lowered down in a lot of areas. We’re going to fix up basically everybody’s front lawn, so it’s a nice grade that comes out to the road,” Liebenow said.

The reconstruction will cover North Main Street from the intersection of West Pleasant Street to the village’s northern edge, a stretch of approximately two blocks.
Funding for the estimated $1.67 million project comes from a combination of grants and village funds. Iron Ridge received $325,000 through the Local Road Improvement Program (LRIP) in 2022 and secured a $950,300 Community Development Block Grant (CDBG) in 2023, after designating North Main Street as a non-through road to reduce truck traffic. The village’s share of the cost will be just over $400,000.
Liebenow emphasized the importance of community input throughout the planning process, noting two well-attended public meetings.
“We need your concerns with the project. We need to know what your concerns are right now so we know how to fix it,” he said.
Construction is expected to begin in June or July and continue through completion later this year.
“When it’s all done, it’s going to be a really nice road. I think everybody will be happy up in that area,” Liebenow said.
