After enduring a tough stretch of games to start the season, the Horicon/Hustisford Marshfalcons (1-5, 1-4) took advantage of the Big Foot Chiefs (1-5, 0-4) to win the homecoming game, played in Hustisford, 40-14.
Big Foot scored early in the first quarter, but it didn’t take long for Husticon to get their offense going as Barrett Meyer took the ball into the end zone on a keeper to tie the game up at 6-6 going into the second quarter.
With just over 10 minutes to go in the second quarter, Meyer connected with Reed Vorlob for a touchdown, and then executed the two-point conversion with a pass to Ethan Strieff to take the lead 14-6.
Vorlob turned around on defense and intercepted Big Foot’s pass to end their drive and give the ball back to the Marshfalcons.
Husticon turned it over on downs on the following drive.
Before halftime, Meyer and Brenden Steinke worked together to sack the Big Foot quarterback and spoil the Chiefs’ chance at scoring. The score remained at 14-6 at the end of the first half.
About halfway through the third quarter, Big Foot scored for the last time in the game and tied it up at 14-14.
While still riding the high of tying the game up, Big Foot was caught off guard by Quin Jackl, who weaved through the Big Foot defense for an impressive 90-yard kick return touchdown. The extra point was added, and Husticon took back the lead 21-14.
Kicking off the fourth quarter was Meyer with a pass to Strieff for a touchdown to make the score 27-14.
Meyer stayed focused as he turned around on defense and intercepted a Chiefs’ pass for a touchdown and ran the score up to 33-14.
Big Foot’s next drive was ruined again as a tipped pass landed right in the hands of Vorlob for another interception.
Christian Schwartz would run it in for the final Husticon touchdown with around five minutes to go in the game. The kick was good, and made the final score 40-14.
Miles Dykstra ended the game with one more interception, concluding the exciting homecoming finale for Horicon and Hustisford.
Next week, Husticon travels to Beloit Turner High School for a game at 7 p.m. on Friday, Oct. 3.
