Horicon Marshmen Celebrate Senior Night with Victory Over Valley Christian

Posted

The Horicon Marshmen, celebrating Senior Night, defeated Valley Christian on Friday, Feb. 20, with a final score of 73-59 in the final conference game. The win improved Horicon’s record to 16-6, while Valley Christian fell to 8-13.
Horicon’s seniors are Christian Schwartz, Barrett Meyer, Quin Jackl, Jay Graven, Logan Robenhorst, Reed Vorlob, and Shiloh Meyer.
The night belonged to the seniors, particularly Quin Jackl, who delivered an exceptional performance on his special night.
The game was tight early on, with Horicon trailing 13-10 before Jackl sank a three-pointer with about 11:30 on the clock to tie the contest. Jackl struck again later in the first half, hitting another three to put Horicon up 30-29.
The Marshmen held a slim lead at the halftime break, 35-32.

Jackl carried his hot hand into the second half, draining another three-pointer that helped Horicon build a significant lead of 48-34. He kept the momentum going, sinking yet another three with just over six minutes left, bringing the score to 61-48. Jackl finished the game with a total of six three-pointers.
Jay Graven also contributed a late-game three.
When the final buzzer sounded, Jackl was the second-leading scorer with 22 points, just behind Meyer, who led all scorers with 26 points.

At Oakfield

The Horicon boys’ basketball team came close to securing a share of the Trailways-East Conference title on Tuesday, February 17, but ultimately fell to a tough Oakfield squad with a final score of 70-63.
The loss meant Oakfield, who now holds an 18-3 record, clinched the sole conference championship. Horicon, moving to 15-6, had been defeated only once previously this season by Oakfield back in January, making this an exciting rematch.
The game started slowly with missed shots from both sides for the first two minutes before Christian Schwartz broke the silence with a layup for Horicon.
The first half was a back-and-forth affair, with Oakfield taking an early lead.
Quin Jackl contributed a three-pointer, and Isaiah Hollingsworth drove in for a score to make it 17-12, in favor of Oakfield.
Later in the half, Jackl’s steal and fast-break bucket, along with a pass to Jay Graven for two, kept the Marshmen in the fight.
The sharp shooting of Barrett Meyer, who sank three three-pointers, was key in leveling the score at 29 heading into the halftime break.
The second half was just as intense. There was an early, controversial intentional foul call on Jackl.
Jackl later hit back-to-back three-pointers, trimming the Oakfield lead to 42-39.
Jay Graven also connected from beyond the arc with just over two minutes remaining.
Meyer continued his exceptional performance, sinking three more three-pointers in the second half for a total of six for the game. In a personal highlight, Meyer scored his 1,000th career point during the second half, an accomplishment celebrated at the home game on Friday night.
With just a minute left, Graven scored and then immediately stole the ball back for two more points, tying the game at 63. However, Horicon was unable to hold off Oakfield’s final surge, failing to score any more points and dropping the contest 70-63.
Meyer finished as the leading scorer with 29 points, while Jackl and Graven each added 15 points.
Horicon traveled across the marsh to Mayville on Monday, Feb. 23, for a non-conference rivalry game. They have another non-conference home game against St. Ambrose on Thursday, Feb. 26 at 7:15 p.m.
