Monday, August 18, the Dodge County Board of Supervisors held a meeting which included a public comment and motion on a potential Data Center Moratorium.
During the public comment section a resident spoke about her concerns with her water in relation to the data center being built in Beaver Dam.
Later in the meeting, the board took action on the ordinance that would enact a moratorium on data centers within the county’s zoning areas.
A moratorium is not a ban on data centers, it is a pause that allows for the county to do research and find out more information on data centers to make a well informed choice in the future.
Five members of the Land Resources and Parks Committee signed the recommendation which was sent to the County Board of Supervisors.
While discussing the moratorium two board members, Daniel Siegmann and Cathy Houchin, mentioned the support that was given for the data center moratorium by those who spoke at the Land Resources and Parks Committee meeting on Monday, August 10.
“There were a lot of people who spoke on this and I think that as supervisors we need to vote for this moratorium and see what happens. See what it does to our land and do an impact study before we allow more,” Board Member Cathy Houchin said.
Then the board voted and the moratorium passed 29 to 2. The two board members who voted against the moratorium were Jamie Klockow and Robert Ballweg. Haley Justmann was absent from the meeting.
This moratorium will last for 18 months and gives the county more time to study and understand data centers’ potential impacts on the people and the land and to protect natural resources and people’s health.
