Clinton Beats Horicon/Hustisford as Clock Runs Out

Posted

The Horicon/Hustisford Marshfalcons (1-7) gave the Clinton Cougars (6-2) a run for their money on Friday night, Oct. 10, as they went point-for-point until the buzzer, when Clinton unfortunately had the ball for the final drive of the game and scored, winning the game and avoiding overtime.
It was quiet on offense in the first quarter for Husticon as the Cougars scored two touchdowns and were successful in each two-point attempt to take an early 16-0 lead.
In the second quarter, the Marshfalcons turned up the heat. Barrett Meyer kept the ball for a quarterback sneak at 10:49 to get Husticon on the board. The two-point attempt was successful, and they now trailed 16-8.
Clinton responded only moments later to make it 24-8, but it was all Husticon until halftime.
Meyer found Brenden Steinke for a 15-yard touchdown halfway through the second quarter, and the two-point attempt was good again to make it 24-16.

Husticon managed to stop Clinton and force a turnover on downs at the two-minute mark. With less than a minute to go, Meyer found Reed Vorlob, who brought the ball in for a first-and-goal. Ethan Strieff completed the drive with a seven-yard passing touchdown. With the extra two points, Hustion tied the game up at 24-24 at halftime.
The Marshfalcons received the ball to start the third quarter, but quickly fumbled it, which the Cougars recovered for a touchdown, just seconds into the quarter. Another two-point attempt from Clinton was successful, and they regained the lead at 32-24.
Meyer and Vorlob connected again around the 8:16 mark in the third quarter. With the extra points, the game was tied up again at 32-32.
Clinton didn’t let the tie stand for long and scored two more touchdowns before the end of the third quarter to make it 48-32 going into the fourth quarter.
Husticon started the final quarter off right when Meyer threw to Graven for a touchdown. The two-point attempt was successful, and the score was now 48-40.
It was unfortunate for the Marshfalcons to see Steinke leave the field with a shoulder injury, shortly after the drive, as several other key players were out this week, and he had stepped up and been playing well throughout the game.
With just over six minutes to go, Meyer threw a 67-yard touchdown pass to Vorlob again. The extra points came easily, and the game was tied at 48-48.
It seemed there could be a possibility for overtime, but the Cougars beat the clock with their final touchdown to win the back-and-forth contest 54-48.
The final Capitol Conference game is on Friday, Oct. 17, and Husticon will be traveling to Lodi (6-2), with kickoff set for 7 p.m.
