Christian Breaks Steals Record as Cardinals Fall to WLA

Posted

Mayville ran into another stiff challenge in conference play Tuesday night, falling 55–33 to Winnebago Lutheran at home in a girls-boys doubleheader that featured the Cardinal boys hosting WLA earlier in the evening.

Despite the loss, the night marked a milestone moment for freshman Ady Christian. Christian surpassed the Mayville High School girls basketball single-season steals record of 126, previously held by Jodi Butzlaff. Christian now has 133 total steals on the season following the WLA game, with two games remaining on the schedule to add to her new record.

The Vikings built an early advantage, taking a 28–15 lead into halftime. Mayville struggled to generate consistent offense in the opening half and was forced to battle from behind the rest of the night.

The Cardinals continued to compete in the second half but could not close the gap, as Winnebago Lutheran added 27 points after the break to secure the 22-point victory. Foul trouble hampered Mayville’s rotation throughout the game, and several junior varsity players saw extended varsity minutes late in the second half.

The Lady Cardinals travel to  Campbellsport (2-18, 0-12) in a conference matchup on Thursday, Feb. 19, with tipoff scheduled for 7 p.m.
