Mayville opened the 2026 season in dramatic fashion Tuesday night, edging Lakeside Lutheran 6-5 on a walk-off sacrifice fly at Fireman’s Field.

After a morning of rain and storms, the sun broke through just in time for first pitch, and the Cardinals made the most of it in front of a home crowd and a Radio Plus Sports livestream audience.

Mayville struck first with a run in the opening inning and stayed within striking distance throughout before delivering late. Trailing 5-4 entering the bottom of the seventh, the Cardinals rallied for two runs to seal the comeback victory.

Paxton Decker provided the game-winner, lifting a sacrifice fly to bring home the winning run and cap the season-opening win.

Tanner Schneider led the Cardinals at the plate, going 2-for-3 with two RBIs, including a double and a triple. Weston Teeters also had a strong all-around performance, finishing 2-for-3 with two RBIs while scoring three runs. Cooper Raddemann added a 2-for-3 effort, and Kevin Keller drove in two runs.

On the mound, Teeters started and struck out nine over four innings, allowing just two hits. Keller picked up the win in relief, striking out six over the final three innings while working through Lakeside Lutheran’s late push.

Lakeside Lutheran was led by Copper G., who drove in two runs, while Cameron added two RBIs. The Warriors plated three runs in the fourth inning and added two more in the sixth to briefly take the lead before Mayville’s final rally.

The Cardinals (1-0) looked to carry the momentum into Thursday’s road game at Marshall, which was cancelled due to weather. After print time, Mayville will host Lomira on Tuesday, April 7, and Horicon on Friday, with the first pitch at 5 p.m.
