The Mayville Cardinals opened postseason play Thursday night, Oct. 23, with a strong 3–0 sweep over Cedar Grove-Belgium in the second round of regional action. The team came ready to compete and executed a balanced offensive attack backed by solid defense and smart serving throughout the match.
Freshman Brielle Ehlers and junior Leah Vossekuil led the offense with commanding performances at the net. Ehlers tallied 12 kills, while Vossekuil added 11 kills on the night. Junior Allison Schellpfeffer also contributed nine kills, giving Mayville consistent options across the front row. Setters Reagan Hardesty and Neva Mittelstadt kept the offense in rhythm, combining for 36 assists, Hardesty with 19 and Mittelstadt with 17.
“I felt we had a slow start. I was pleased that Reagan served strong and set well to help us generate offense. Allison looked great offensively and defensively. Leah, of course, had another great match,” said head coach Alan Capps.
Defensively, Lilian Mansueto anchored the back row with 16 digs and a team-high 19 serve receptions. Marissa Vander Schaaf and Schelpfeffer each added strong defensive support with ten and eight digs, respectively. At the net, Vossekuil and Amelia Boeder each tallied three blocks, helping limit the Rockets’ offensive momentum.
Mayville’s serving game played a key role in keeping Cedar Grove-Belgium off balance. Hardesty led from the line with four aces, while Vander Schaaf and Schelpfeffer each added pressure with multiple aces of their own.
The win advanced the Cardinals to the regional semifinal Saturday night, Oct. 25, where they faced a tough Living Word Lutheran squad. Mayville battled through three competitive sets but fell 0–3 to the top-seeded Timberwolves. Despite the loss, the Cardinals showed grit and teamwork throughout their postseason run.
Reflecting on the season, Capps concludes, “I’m really proud of how much this group has grown over the season. They’ve learned how each of them fits into what we’re building at Mayville, and what stands out most is how little drama there is; every player shows up ready to work hard and gets better every day.”
“Our playoff run was a great experience for such a young team: two freshmen, two sophomores, seven juniors, and one senior. One of the biggest lessons we’re taking away is believing that we truly belong on the same level as some of the top programs in the state. That kind of confidence takes time to build, but every match, especially in the postseason, helps us take another step forward,” concluded Capps.
