Mayville put together a gritty performance Tuesday, Dec. 2, but couldn’t overcome Port Washington’s perimeter shooting in a 65–53 road loss. Despite the setback, the Cardinals dominated the glass, posting 58 total rebounds, including a remarkable 20 offensive boards, out-rebounding the Pirates by 22.
Senior Talan Meyer led Mayville with 15 points on 7-of-16 shooting while adding three assists. Fellow senior Braxton Wiese contributed 10 points, including a three-pointer, and junior Joe Promersberger added nine points along with five rebounds and a block.
On the boards, senior Tate Drinkwine powered his way to a 10-rebound night—eight of them offensive—while also leading the team with seven assists. Senior Landen Baker chipped in with four rebounds as Mayville controlled much of the inside play.
Defensively, the Cardinals tallied eight blocks and four steals, but Port Washington answered by converting six threes and capitalizing on 19 Mayville turnovers. Free-throw struggles (5-for-11) also made it difficult for the Cards to close the gap.
Returning home for their conference opener, taking on North Fond du Lac (NFDL) on Thursday, Dec. 4, the Cardinals delivered a high-energy, physical game that brought the crowd to its feet. Mayville jumped out to a 45–21 halftime lead, weathered foul trouble across multiple positions, and kept momentum rolling for a convincing 78–59 victory.
Senior Talan Meyer paced the Cardinals with 16 points, while Emerson Mittelstadt followed with a strong 13-point performance that included the highlight of the night—an electric behind-the-back assist to Tate Drinkwine, who finished with eight points. Senior Braxton Wiese added 10 points in another steady outing, while Landon Baker and Kevin Keller combined for 14 points to round out Mayville’s balanced scoring attack.
Additional contributions from Cooper Raddemann, Owen Steger, Collen Ehlers, Weston Teeters, and Joe Promersberger helped keep the Cardinals firmly in control as NFDL rotated underclassmen into the final minutes, bringing the Cardinals 1-1 overall for the season.
Looking ahead, the Cardinals now turn their attention to a tough road stretch of conference play. Mayville traveled to Omro (0-3) on Tuesday, Dec. 9, and then they travel to St. Mary’s Springs (1-2) on Thursday, Dec. 11, at 7 p.m.
