Cardinals Soccer Shows Growth, Sets Foundation for the Future

The Mayville boys’ varsity soccer team wrapped up its 2025 season with a 6-15-2 record, highlighted by steady growth, technical improvement, and strong leadership from its senior class.

Head Coach Bill Brownlow reflected on a season filled with competitive matches and moments that demonstrated the team’s progress. “Our game at Lomira was a good example of the team playing well,” Brownlow said. “We executed our game plan, and our best players made plays to help us win 3-0. Our regular-season finale at Columbus was another good example of us playing well. Although we lost 1-0, we had more than 20 shots and passed well, but just couldn't find the breakthrough.”

Throughout the season, the Cardinals developed as a technically sound and cohesive unit. “Our team developed a high level of technical ability,” Brownlow said. “This year, there were no technically weak players. Whenever I looked to the bench, every player I saw could execute the game plan. Even in games where we were more defensive, we still had good counterattacks because players were able to find feet and offer a goal threat.”

Leadership from the senior group helped set the tone for the program. “We had a good mix of seniors used to playing big roles and seniors who were stepping into big roles for the first time,” Brownlow said. “Teamwork and communication were very important for us, and the seniors set the tone for our group. The seniors also scored important goals when we needed someone to step up. Gerardo scored five goals—four of them were the opening goal and game winner, and the fifth was a tying goal late in a game.”

Looking ahead, Brownlow sees promise in the younger players who gained valuable experience this fall. “Our seniors leave behind some big shoes to fill, but our freshmen have a lot of experience from this year,” he said. “As always, we need a stout defense and a steady goalkeeper, and we have younger players who demonstrated this year that they can fill these roles. We'll also need players who can lead our counterattacks with pace, and we saw signs this year of young players ready to take on that role as well. If we have a good offseason, we can expect to take a step forward next year and turn some of those close losses into positive results.”
