(Article Updated on 8/24)

Mayville opened the 2026 season Friday night, Aug. 21, with a 23-0 shutout win over Cedar Grove-Belgium in front of the home crowd at Ray Dunn Field.
The game got off to a slow start, with both teams trading three-and-outs and Mayville’s defense keeping the Rockets around midfield. The Cardinals eventually found their rhythm in the second quarter. Senior quarterback Joe Promersberger opened the scoring on a 6-yard keeper with 10:36 remaining in the half. Junior Dominic Schuelke followed with a 4-yard touchdown run to give Mayville a 14-0 halftime lead.
Weston Teeters came up with a big third-down tackle for a loss as the Cardinals’ defense continued to keep the Rockets out of the end zone.
Mayville began moving the ball more consistently after halftime, with Schuelke serving as the workhorse for the Cardinals’ ground game. He finished with 26 carries for 137 yards and two touchdowns. Promersberger added 26 yards and a touchdown as Mayville rushed for 177 yards.

Owen Mlsna extended the lead with a 34-yard field goal in the third quarter before Schuelke capped the scoring with a 3-yard touchdown run in the fourth.
Cedar Grove-Belgium appeared to get on the board on a punt return, but the play was ruled a touchback, drawing a strong reaction from the Rockets’ crowd. Mayville’s defense went on to preserve the shutout, holding Cedar Grove-Belgium to 128 yards of total offense and just five first downs. Kellen Schaeffer recorded a 10-yard sack and tackle for loss, while Kevin Keller came away with an interception.
Head coach Scott Hilber liked the way his team responded after the uneven opening quarter.
“The fact that the guys just kind of stayed the course, they didn’t panic and they allowed us to figure it out — they had patience,” Hilber said. “Hats off to our defense today. Obviously, they played really solid, getting a shutout. We never had a shutout against Cedar Grove-Belgium before, so good job by them.”
Hilber said the opener also showed the grit of a team that does not have the same depth as last season’s squad.
“They’ve got tons of heart because they just kept encouraging each other and busting through it,” Hilber said. “You’re always looking for the grit of your team, their heart, their perseverance, how they treat each other in times of crisis. I thought everyone stepped up tonight.”
The Cardinals finished with 197 yards of total offense and 14 first downs while committing just three penalties for 25 yards.
Mayville starts the season (1-0) and will look to carry the momentum into next week’s matchup at Lake Country Lutheran (1-0) on Friday, August 28, kickoff 7 p.m.
