The Mayville Cardinals softball continued to battle through a difficult week, falling 10-0 to Campbellsport High School softball on Monday, May 4, and 20-3 to Winnebago Lutheran Academy softball on Friday, May 8.
Against Campbellsport, the Cardinals collected four hits, led by Rozalynn Selsing with two hits. Lilian Mansueto and Allison Muche each added a hit as Mayville continued to show improvement at the plate despite being shut out. Janel Youngbeck pitched the opening three innings before Mansueto worked the final three innings in relief.
Friday’s home matchup against WLA featured several exciting moments early despite the final score. Mansueto opened the game with a highlight-reel defensive play in center field, stretching over the fence to haul in a deep fly ball off the first pitch of the game. The Cardinals held WLA to just one run in the opening inning and answered with aggressive base running and strong defensive plays of their own.
Later in the game, Mayville escaped another jam after a bases-loaded popup drifted beyond the first-base line, where the Cardinals came up with a key catch to end the inning.
Mansueto paced the offense against WLA, going 3-for-3 with two RBIs and a double. Megan Promersberger and Helena Weinberger each added hits as the Cardinals finished with five total. Youngbeck started in the circle before Promersberger and Mansueto provided relief innings.
Despite the rebuilding season and youthful roster, Mayville continues to show flashes of growth, hustle, and defensive effort as the Cardinals gain experience throughout conference play.
The Cardinals (0-15, 0-11) start the week at home Tuesday, May 12, hosting NFDL (4-12,3-7) on Parents Night and travel to Laconia (10-4,7-3) on Thursday, May 14, with first pitch at 5 p.m.
