MAYVILLE — Mayville celebrated Senior and Parents Night with a commanding 42-12 win over St. Mary’s Springs Friday night at Ray Dunn Field.
The Cardinals honored their seniors and parents before kickoff, then took control behind a dominant ground game and defense that limited Springs to 119 yards of total offense.
Joe Promersberger led Mayville with 195 rushing yards and four touchdowns on 30 carries. He broke loose for a 50-yard touchdown in the first quarter and added three more scores as the Cardinals built a 35-0 lead.
After the game, Promersberger noted the Cardinals had gone back to some of the formations used by the 2022 team. Head coach Scott Hilber clarified that the adjustment was formational rather than a change in Mayville’s offense.
“We’ve been running a symmetric offense and a symmetric offense needs to be balanced, and that balance has to come naturally,” Hilber said. “We have not been very balanced, and we feel the change is best for our personnel.”
Hilber also credited the offensive line after challenging the group to bring more physicality following the previous week’s loss at Campbellsport.
“Our line was firing off the ball tonight,” Hilber said. “We challenged the boys to be the most physical team on the field this week, which didn’t happen last week, and they responded the way we would expect them to.”
Cooper Raddemann added a 20-yard rushing touchdown and completed 4 of 5 passes for 62 yards. He connected with Covyn Casper for a 28-yard fourth-quarter touchdown to complete Mayville’s scoring.
The Cardinals finished with 405 yards of offense, including 343 on the ground. Tanner Schneider added 67 rushing yards.
Mayville was equally strong defensively, holding Springs to 39 rushing yards. Hilber once again pointed to the Cardinals’ defensive front.
“Primarily, great D-line play again,” Hilber said. “There were a couple of lapses in our execution right before halftime, but we made a simple adjustment and the boys played very solid in the second half.”
The Ledgers broke through in the third quarter when Tyler Kant returned an 86-yard kickoff for a touchdown. Quarterback Zander Lenz later connected with Joey Coon for a 34-yard score, accounting for Springs’ other touchdown.
Mayville’s defensive front kept pressure on Springs, with Kellen Schaeffer, Jake Gourlie and Weston Teeters each recording a sack.
The night also included a special halftime presentation as Brian Thom received the Katy Award. Thom was presented with a plaque, with his family by his side.
For Hilber, the performance was an important response after Mayville’s 12-10 loss at Campbellsport.
“It was huge for our confidence and our swagger,” Hilber said. “Springs’ record isn’t where it usually is, but they beat a very good Racine St. Cats team and they have not been physically handled by any team since week 1 versus arguably the best small school in the state. The fact that we were able to physically dominate this game will help our belief in ourselves that we can and will continue to play the Mayville brand of football.”
The Cardinals take to the field on Friday, Oct. 2 for conference play at Omro. Kickoff at 7 p.m.
