Mayville wasted little time taking control Friday night on the road, using an explosive ground attack and big plays throughout the lineup to roll past North Fond du Lac, 56-7.
The Cardinals were explosive from the start, finishing with 475 yards of offense and averaging 14 yards per play. Mayville did most of its damage on the ground, rushing for 393 yards while building a 42-7 halftime advantage.
“It’s always fun when a lot of guys can get meaningful minutes and be productive,” Mayville head coach Scott Hilber said.
Joe Promersberger led a deep Mayville rushing attack with 154 yards and a touchdown on eight carries. Kevin Keller added 71 yards and two touchdowns, while Tanner Schneider rushed for 59 yards and a score.
Dominic Schuelke added 25 yards and a touchdown before leaving with an injury. His absence provided an opportunity for others in Mayville’s Wing-T offense, with Promersberger stepping into a larger role and Cooper Raddemann taking snaps at quarterback.
“Having a multiple running attack is what makes the Wing-T click,” Hilber said. “Unfortunately, Dom got hurt, but Joe filled in more than admirably and so did Cooper at quarterback. Shows how deep our talent goes on this team.”
Dominic Schuelke and August Giese also found the end zone as six Cardinals accounted for Mayville’s eight touchdowns.
Cooper Raddemann gave Mayville another dimension through the air, completing all three of his attempts for 82 yards and two touchdowns. Both scores went to Micah Twohwig, who finished with two receptions for 46 yards. Covyn Casper added a 36-yard reception.
North Fond du Lac produced its biggest play early in the second quarter when quarterback Wyatt Goldapske connected with Braydon Wojkiewicz for a 66-yard touchdown, cutting Mayville’s advantage to 21-7.
The Orioles, however, had difficulty finding room against the Cardinal defense the rest of the night. Mayville limited North Fond du Lac to 46 rushing yards and 171 yards of total offense. Schneider added an interception for the Cardinals.
Hilber said Mayville has been able to rotate players defensively, helping keep the unit fresh, but sees room for improvement in the secondary.
“Defensively we are holding up while being able to play a lot of different people to keep us fresh,” Hilber said. “We still make mistakes in our zone coverage, which is a matter of people getting used to playing new positions.”
Goldapske finished with 125 passing yards for NFDL, while Hudson Schumacher caught four passes for 44 yards. Jaden Vazquez-Mendoza led the Orioles on the ground.
Mayville’s ability to produce big plays stood out throughout the night. Promersberger broke free for a 45-yard touchdown, Keller scored from 38 yards out and Raddemann connected with Twohwig for touchdown passes of 29 and 17 yards.
The Cardinals also kept mistakes to a minimum, finishing with just two penalties and no turnovers.
Mayville now turns its attention to a road matchup against Campbellsport, where Hilber expects the battle up front to be important.
“Our offensive line needs to continue their trajectory with being on assignment and playing physically,” Hilber said. “Defensively, I think we can still be more physical and we have to clear up the mistakes. Campbellsport will be a tough matchup at the line of scrimmage.”
Mayville (3-1,2-0) continues conference play, turning its attention to Campbellsport (1-3, 1-1) on Friday, September 18, kickoff at 7 p.m.
