The Mayville volleyball team put together a strong opening week, picking up six wins over two days of competition, including four victories Saturday at Hartford Union High School.
Cardinals Sweep Horicon Triangular
Mayville opened the 2026 season Tuesday, Aug. 25, on the road at the Horicon Triangular, starting the night against Milwaukee Juneau.
The Cardinals wasted little time finding their rhythm, rolling to a 25-5 win in the opening set before taking the second, 25-10, for the 2-0 sweep.
Mayville finished with 24 kills, 10 service aces, 17 assists and 14 digs. Lilian Mansueto led the attack with eight kills and a .312 hitting percentage, while Brielle Ehlers added five kills and a block.
The Cardinals carried that momentum into their second match against host Horicon, picking up another 2-0 victory to leave the triangular with a 2-0 start to the season.
Mansueto Reaches Milestone at Hartford
Mayville returned to the court Saturday, Aug. 29, for tournament action at Hartford Union High School, where the Cardinals went 4-1 on the day.
The biggest highlight of Saturday’s tournament came when senior Lilian Mansueto recorded the 1,000th dig of her Mayville career. Mansueto reached the milestone during the first week of her fourth varsity season, with her teammates and family joining in the celebration.
“The fact that an athlete gets 1,000 digs in the first week of her senior season is the story,” Head Coach Alan Capps said. “This only happens because she made varsity as a freshman as a libero, then switched to a first-team all-conference outside hitter, then back to libero for her senior season.”
Capps said Mansueto’s versatility and longevity have made her a special part of the program.
“What a special athlete and even more special person,” Capps said. “She will be a rare four-year starter and I will cry like a baby at the awards banquet!”
The celebration also showed what Mansueto means to the rest of the Cardinals.
“Her teammates love her and the party was just getting started last I checked!” Capps said.
Mansueto’s milestone highlighted a big day for the Cardinals, who went 4-1 at Hartford and improved to 6-1 on the season.
Mayville opened against Winneconne in a tightly contested match. The Cardinals came out on top in a pair of 25-23 sets to earn the 2-0 win.
The Cardinals followed with a 2-0 victory over Appleton West, taking the opening set 25-20 before pulling away for a convincing 25-7 second-set win.
Mayville kept rolling against St. Joseph, winning 25-11 and 25-12 for its third straight sweep of the tournament.
The Cardinals faced their toughest battle of the day against host Hartford. After dropping the opening set 25-23, Mayville fought back to edge Hartford 26-24 in the second. The deciding third set was just as close, with the Cardinals coming away with a 16-14 victory to complete the 2-1 comeback.
Mayville’s run ended against Campbellsport, with the Cougars taking two closely contested sets, 25-22 and 25-22. The 2-0 loss was the Cardinals’ first of the young season.
The Cardinals return home Thursday, Sept. 3, hosting Omro at 7 p.m.
