(Article Updated on 9/21)

Mayville battled through heavy rain and challenging field conditions Friday night, but a late Campbellsport touchdown handed the Cardinals a 12-10 road loss in a hard-fought Flyway Conference matchup.

Mayville struck first when Joe Promersberger capped an early drive with a nine-yard touchdown run. Owen Mlsna added the extra point to give the Cardinals a 7-0 lead.

Campbellsport answered immediately when Damien Braund returned the ensuing kickoff 85 yards for a touchdown. The two-point conversion failed, leaving Mayville with a 7-6 advantage.

The Cardinals leaned on their ground game throughout the rainy contest, with Promersberger leading the way with 119 rushing yards and a touchdown. Tanner Schneider added 58 yards, while quarterback Cooper Raddemann contributed 29 yards on the ground.

Mayville's defense kept the Cougars out of the end zone through the second and third quarters, recovering two fumbles and limiting Campbellsport's offensive opportunities.

Mlsna extended the Cardinals' lead with a 19-yard field goal late in the third quarter, putting Mayville ahead 10-6 heading into the final period.

Campbellsport, however, found the end zone with 4:33 remaining when quarterback Carter Gellings scored on a 12-yard run. The two-point conversion failed, but the Cougars had taken their first lead of the night, 12-10.

Mayville was unable to answer in the closing minutes.

Despite the loss, the Cardinals held a 16-7 advantage in first downs and outgained Campbellsport on the ground, 218-145. Mayville's defense limited the Cougars to 145 total yards, while Campbellsport's Elliot Fleischman and Quinten Cappozzo each recorded an interception.

Mayville football will host Springs on Friday, Sept. 25 at 7 p.m.
