MAYVILLE — Winnebago Lutheran Academy controlled the opening half Friday night, but Mayville responded with 34 unanswered points to rally for a 34-19 victory at Ray Dunn Field.

Dominic Schuelke powered the Cardinals with 295 rushing yards and four touchdowns on 33 carries, while Mayville’s defense shut out WLA in the second half.

The Vikings jumped out to a lead when quarterback Evan Cole connected with Quinn Gensler for a 20-yard touchdown with 7:44 remaining in the first quarter. Cole added a nine-yard touchdown run later in the quarter to give WLA a 12-0 lead.

Eli Muche extended the advantage with a 28-yard touchdown run in the second quarter, and Cole’s extra point put the Vikings ahead 19-0.

Mayville began its comeback when Schuelke scored from one yard out, cutting WLA’s halftime advantage to 19-7.

The Cardinals continued to close the gap in the third quarter. Joe Promersberger scored on a one-yard run with 4:38 remaining, and Owen Mlsna’s extra point made it 19-14.

Mayville took over in the fourth.

Schuelke’s four-yard touchdown with 10:48 remaining gave the Cardinals their first lead, 20-19. He broke loose for a 34-yard score less than three minutes later, then added a six-yard touchdown with 4:33 left to seal the 34-19 victory.

Mayville finished with 430 yards of offense, including 350 rushing, compared to WLA’s 272 total yards. The Cardinals also held a 24-11 advantage in first downs.

Promersberger completed six of 12 passes for 80 yards and rushed for a touchdown. Cooper Raddemann led Mayville receivers with two catches for 35 yards.

The Cardinals committed no turnovers and held WLA to 1-for-11 on third down.

After falling behind 19-0, Mayville’s defense kept the Vikings off the scoreboard for the remainder of the game while Schuelke and the Cardinal ground attack turned the early deficit into a 15-point victory.

Following the comeback win, Mayville’s seniors stayed on the field to sign senior posters for fans, putting a community finish on the night at Ray Dunn Field.
