Cardinals Earn Five Medals at Season-Opening Jamie Block Invite

Posted

WEST BEND — The Mayville varsity cross country teams opened the 2026 season Saturday, Aug. 29, traveling to West Bend for the Jamie Block Invite hosted by the West Bend schools.

The Jamie Block Invite is run differently than a typical cross country meet, with athletes competing against runners in their own grade level for individual awards. Team scores are also determined by grade, and Mayville did not have enough runners in any one grade to record a team score.

Competing in a field made up primarily of large Division 1 schools, the Cardinals came away with five medals — Mayville’s most at the meet since 1996. 11 Mayville runners also recorded their best times ever on the West Bend course.

Mette Genz led the Mayville senior girls with a ninth-place finish (22:49.2), while Sidney Davis earned a medal with a 14th-place finish (23:44.0). Samara Herzog placed 10th (22:59.1)in the junior girls division, and Bella Wege finished 12th (25:16.5) among the sophomore girls to earn a medal.

Freshman Marcus Genz led the Mayville boys, placing ninth in the freshman race to earn a medal, finishing with a time of 25:16.5.

While no other Cardinal boys reached the medal stand, six of Mayville’s seven boys ran their best times ever on the course. Reid Schmidt, Caden Lindgren, Phoenix Ellingson, Tristen Feucht and Lachlan Worthington were among those turning in personal-best performances at the meet.

Ellingson made one of the biggest improvements, cutting four minutes off his time from last year and finishing in 20:06.1 over the 5,000-meter course — the fastest time of the day for the Mayville boys.

Mayville returns to competition Thursday, Sept. 3, when the Cardinals co-host the Dodge County Invite with Horicon at River Bend. The girls race begins at 4:15 p.m., followed by the boys at 4:50 p.m. and the junior high races.
