MAYVILLE — The Mayville cross country teams continued what head coach Bob Berry called one of their best seasons in a long time with a strong showing at the Mike Hurlbert Invite on Friday, Sept. 11, at the Mayville Golf Course.
Competing against a large field, the Cardinals brought home nine individual medals. The Mayville boys finished fifth and the girls seventh among 14 schools, with Berry noting that both squads finished ahead of programs they have not beaten in quite some time.
Area programs Horicon and Lomira joined Mayville in the field, giving the meet a strong local presence among the 14 competing schools. Horicon head coach Amy Rodriguez said the size and strength of the field gave her runners an opportunity to show how they respond to tough competition.
“What stood out to me is even [with] strong competition, they are ready to race and support each other,” Rodriguez said. “Our runners continued to show the toughness and team mindset that we value.”
Rodriguez was also encouraged by the progress she saw throughout the Horicon lineup.
“We had several athletes take a step forward and get out of their comfort zones,” Rodriguez said. “It was exciting to see our younger runners gain confidence and attack the course to ultimately achieve new PR goals.”
Horicon individual results are included with the meet results accompanying this story.
The varsity races featured plenty of competition, with 130 runners in the girls race and 160 in the boys race.
Samara Herzog led the Mayville girls, placing 19th (21:39.41), while Sidney Davis followed in 21st (21:51.64) and Mette Genz finished 28th (22:44.63).
On the boys side, Phoenix Ellingson led a tight group of Cardinals with a 22nd-place finish (19:41.27). Reid Schmidt was right behind in 23rd (19:42.43), followed by Caden Lindgren in 25th (19:44.09) and Marcus Genz in 27th (19:50.69).
Mayville also earned a medal in the junior high competition, with Ian Cloninger placing sixth in the 3,000-meter race.
Area programs Horicon and Lomira were among the teams competing at the Mayville Golf Course, adding a local flavor to a large meet that annually brings together schools from around the area.
The meet also carries a long history in Mayville. According to Berry, an invitational has been held at the golf course for the last 60 years, with the meet moved to other schools only twice during that span because of flooding.
The Mike Hurlbert Invite carries special meaning for the Mayville community. The meet is named in memory of Mike Hurlbert, a Mayville High School sophomore and cross country, track and basketball athlete who died from a sudden heart condition in 1984. His father, Jack Hurlbert, was also a longtime community figure who served as Mayville School Board president. The annual September meet continues to honor Mike’s memory while bringing generations of runners to the Mayville Golf Course.
Mayville has a busy week ahead with two meets. The Cardinals travel to the Fond du Lac County Park in Waupun on Tuesday, Sept. 15. Junior high runs at 4 p.m., followed by the girls at 4:30 p.m. and boys at 5:15 p.m.
The Cardinals then travel to Ripon on Saturday, Sept. 19, with the junior high race beginning at 9:30 a.m.
