The Mayville Cardinals battled through a challenging stretch last week, dropping their first two contests before finishing on a high note with a thrilling walk-off victory at Fireman’s Field.
Mayville opened the week on Tuesday, April 7, with a tough 2-0 loss to North Fond du Lac. In a tightly contested matchup, the Cardinals were held scoreless despite solid defensive play, as runs proved hard to come by.
The two teams met again on Thursday, April 9, in North Fond du Lac, where Mayville again came up short in a 3-0 defeat. The Cardinals continued to show strength on the mound and in the field, but were unable to generate offensive momentum against the Orioles.
Back at home on Friday, April 10, Mayville turned things around in dramatic fashion, edging Horicon 6-5 at Fireman’s Field. The highlight of the night came off the bat of Tanner Schneider, who launched a home run to spark the Cardinals’ offense.
Mayville held off a late push from Horicon and secured the one-run victory, giving the team a much-needed boost to close out the week.
With the win, the Cardinals showed resilience after two early setbacks and will look to carry that momentum into the upcoming schedule.
The Cardinals (2-2) look to have a busy week on the road, Monday, April 13, at Waterloo (1-0), Tuesday, April 16 at Campbellsport (3-2). Mayville will host Campbellsport on Thursday, April 16, first pitch at 5 p.m., and Oostburg (2-0) on Friday, April 17, first pitch at 4:30 p.m.
