Cardinals Bounce Back Against Laconia Before Falling to Oakfield in Nonconference Test

Posted

The Mayville boys basketball team dropped a 72–58 nonconference loss to visiting Oakfield on Saturday afternoon, falling to 10–8 overall.

Facing a hot-shooting Oakfield squad that entered the game at 16–3, the Cardinals battled early but were unable to slow the Oaks’ balanced scoring attack. Oakfield shot 50 percent from the field (24-of-48) and converted 19 free throws, capitalizing on trips to the line to maintain separation.

Senior Talan Meyer led Mayville with 18 points, including two three-pointers, while adding nine rebounds, four assists, and two steals. Emerson Mittelstadt contributed 12 points, four rebounds, and three assists, and Braxton Wiese chipped in 10 points, knocking down a pair of three-pointers.

The Cardinals connected on six three-pointers. Mayville held a slight 33–31 rebounding edge, including 12 offensive boards, and recorded eight steals, but struggled to match Oakfield’s efficiency on the offensive end.

Despite solid efforts on the glass from Meyer and Tate Drinkwine, who added seven rebounds, the Cardinals were unable to overcome Oakfield’s scoring depth and free-throw advantage.

Cardinals Outlast Laconia 66–62 to Snap Skid

The Mayville boys basketball team returned to the win column Thursday night, holding off Laconia for a 66–62 Flyway Conference victory on the road.

Coming off back-to-back losses, the Cardinals responded with one of their most efficient offensive performances of the season. Mayville led 34–33 at halftime and matched Laconia point-for-point in the second half to secure the four-point win.

Senior Talan Meyer paced the Cardinals with 17 points, shooting 7-of-12 from the field and knocking down two three-pointers while adding five rebounds and two steals. Junior Kevin Keller delivered a breakout performance with 14 points, hitting both of his three-point attempts and going 6-of-7 at the free-throw line. Braxton Wiese chipped in 11 points to round out Mayville’s double-figure scorers.

The Cardinals shot an impressive 55 percent from the floor (23-of-42) and 44 percent from three-point range, finishing with a strong 64 effective field goal percentage. Mayville also connected on 12 free throws and moved the ball well, recording 14 assists.

On the defensive end, Emerson Mittelstadt led the way with six rebounds and two steals, while Meyer and Tate Drinkwine each grabbed five boards. The Cardinals totaled 26 rebounds, seven steals, and limited Laconia’s second-half runs with timely stops.

Despite 17 turnovers, Mayville’s efficient shooting and balanced scoring proved enough to hold off the Spartans down the stretch.

WLA Edges Cardinals 62–60 in Physical Flyway Battle

The Mayville boys basketball team opened a busy three-game week Tuesday night with a hard-fought 62–60 Flyway Conference loss to Winnebago Lutheran Academy.

In a physical, back-and-forth contest, neither team was able to build much separation. The Cardinals kept the game within a possession in the final minutes, but WLA made key plays late to secure the two-point win. Mayville drops to 9–7 overall.

Senior Tate Drinkwine led the Cardinals with 20 points, hitting three three-pointers and going 3-for-5 at the free-throw line. Talan Meyer added 11 points and a team-high nine rebounds, including five offensive boards, while Emerson Mittelstadt contributed 11 points and seven rebounds.

Mayville shot 44 percent from the field (24-for-55) and dominated the glass with a 43–20 rebounding advantage, including 19 offensive rebounds that created multiple second-chance opportunities. Braxton Wiese added eight rebounds, five on the offensive end, helping the Cardinals control much of the interior play.

Defensively, Mayville held WLA to 43 percent shooting overall, but the Vikings made the difference from beyond the arc, connecting on 11 of 23 three-pointers.

Despite strong defensive stretches and keeping the game to a one-possession margin late, turnovers proved costly as Mayville committed 20 turnovers compared to WLA’s 15. The Vikings capitalized just enough down the stretch to pull ahead in the closing seconds.

Mayville (10–8, 8–3) returns to action on Tuesday, Feb. 17, on the road in conference play, taking on Campbellsport (7-13,4-7). The Cardinals continue conference play at home on Friday, Feb. 20, in a matchup against Springs (7-13, 4-7), with tipoff set for 7 p.m.
