The Mayville Cardinals’ postseason run came to a close Thursday night with a hard-fought 2-1 loss to St. Mary’s Springs in the WIAA Division 3 Regional Final. Despite a solid pitching performance and a clean game in the field, the Cardinals couldn’t find the extra spark they needed to advance.
Springs got on the board early with two runs, and while Mayville responded in the fourth with a run from Tanner Schneider, who reached base and came around to score after a Kevin Keller RBI single, it proved to be the Cardinals’ only offense of the night.
In the top of the fourth, Springs made a pitching change after Schneider crossed the plate. Mayville looked ready to tie things up after Keller’s hit and an overthrow advanced him to second, but a groundout ended the threat.
The fifth inning brought high drama when Springs tried a delayed steal from third. With runners caught in a pickle between first and second, the runner at third broke for home, only to be tagged out at the plate on a strong throw and quick tag by Schneider, halting the Springs rally.
Defensively, the Cardinals held strong. In the sixth, Blake Peterson tracked down a fly to center, and Weston Teeters snagged a line drive on the mound for the second out, leading to a three-up, three-down inning.
The game also saw a rare sideline moment in the bottom of the third, when the Springs’ head coach was ejected after a heated exchange with the umpire over a call.
Offensively, Keller went 1-for-3 with an RBI, Bobby Held doubled, and Joe Promersberger added a hit. Teeters pitched a complete game, giving up six hits and two earned runs while striking out five and walking just one.
The Cardinals finish their season with a 20-6 overall record. The field looked pristine for the finale, and while the scoreboard didn’t swing in Mayville’s favor, the team played with grit and poise in front of their home crowd.
Cardinals Rally in Sixth to Win Regional Thriller Over Living Word Lutheran
The Mayville Cardinals opened their WIAA Division 3 Regional play with a hard-fought 2-1 victory over Living Word Lutheran on Wednesday night, advancing to the next round of postseason play.
After falling behind 1-0 in the third, Mayville remained quiet at the plate until the bottom of the fourth when Weston Teeters sparked the offense with a deep fly ball to center for the Cardinals’ first hit of the night. Defensively, the Cardinals kept the game within reach with key plays in the top of the fifth—Teeters made a tough stretch at first for the out, followed by a pop fly snag just beyond the baseline near the fence, and catcher Tanner Schneider secured a third-out catch to end the inning with a quick three-up, three-down.
The game swung in the bottom of the sixth. Teeters stepped up and delivered a game-tying solo home run. Kevin Keller followed with a big triple to deep right, driving in what would become the go-ahead run and giving the Cardinals their first lead at 2-1.
With the home crowd on their feet and “Wild Thing” echoing through the stands in the seventh, pitcher Mason Gerth stayed locked in. After issuing a walk to the first batter, Gerth struck out the next. The game ended with a slick double play—Bobby Held fielded a sharp grounder, flipped to second baseman Austin Thoreson, who tossed to first to seal the win.
Gerth went the full seven innings, giving up just one earned run on five hits, walking one, and striking out five. At the plate, Teeters went 2-for-3 with a homer and a run scored. Schneider and Keller each had two hits, with Keller picking up an RBI on his triple.
