The Mayville girls basketball team kept its postseason run alive Tuesday night, coming off a conference win over Campbellsport, earning a 53–32 victory over No. 8-seeded Berlin in the WIAA Division 3 Sectional first round.
The Cardinals (7-18) built a steady first-half cushion, taking a 26–20 lead into the break before clamping down defensively in the second half. Mayville limited Berlin to just 12 points after halftime while adding 27 of its own to pull away for the 21-point win. The matchup marked the first recorded meeting between the two programs on Bound.
Freshman Brielle Ehlers delivered a dominant all-around performance, finishing with 15 points, 16 rebounds, and five blocks. With those five blocks, Ehlers officially surpassed the school’s single-season record of 56, a mark set during the 2000–01 season by Tammy (Backhaus) Casper.
Senior Layla Budahn added 14 points and six rebounds, while freshman Ady Christian chipped in 13 points, including three 3-pointers, along with eight rebounds, seven assists, and six steals, adding to her school record for steals. Madison Justman dished out six assists as Mayville totaled 16 assists on 21 made field goals.
The Cardinals shot 21-of-55 from the field, knocked down four 3-pointers, and pulled in 41 total rebounds, including 13 on the offensive glass. Defensively, Mayville recorded 13 steals and six blocks while holding Berlin to 32 total points.
The victory advanced Mayville to Friday’s second-round regional matchup against No. 1-seeded Oostburg. The Cardinals’ postseason run came to an end there, as Oostburg used its depth and offensive firepower to secure a 90–38 win.
Despite the season-ending loss, the Cardinals closed the year with a regional victory and several milestones, highlighted by Ehlers’ and Christian’s record-breaking performances and continued growth from a young roster that will look to build on its postseason experience next winter.
