The Mayville Cross Country teams battled through a challenging course and some midseason injuries on Thursday, October 2, at the Slinger Invitational, held at Heritage Trails County Park. Competing in the small-school division, the Cardinal girls placed second out of eight teams, while the boys finished sixth overall.
Despite being without their usual second and fourth runners, the Mayville girls showed depth and determination to earn their second straight runner-up team finish. Leading the way once again was Sidney Davis, who continued her strong season with a sixth-place medal performance. Destiny Giese also had a standout day, running a personal best to earn 18th-place and a medal. Rounding out Mayville’s top finishers were Mette Genz (21st), Lydia Case (25th), Helen Vanderloop (29th), Pearl Witek (34th), and Bella Wege (35th).
On the boys’ side, Adam Boehnlein led the Cardinals with an eighth-place finish on what coaches called “a very tough course.” He was followed by strong efforts from Caden Lindgren (23rd), Reid Schmidt (27th), Tristen Feucht (36th), Mac Livingston (37th), Phoenix Ellingson (39th), and Alex Richter (44th).
“It’s great to see our athletes pushing through adversity and continuing to perform well as a team,” said the Mayville coaching staff. “We’re proud of the effort and progress across the board.”
Next week, the junior high team heads to Rosendale for the Laconia meet on Tuesday, October 7, with races starting around 5:15 p.m. near the high school.
The high school squads will compete Thursday, October 9, at Campbellsport Elementary School (boys race at 4:25, girls at 5:05). The middle school team will wrap up the week at the state meet in Weyauwega on Saturday, October 11.
